Our specialization of treating addictions and mental health issues has taught us that being drug free is only the first step in the journey of recovery. Wellness is the ultimate goal.
Each session has a specific purpose in the structured process of guiding a substance abuser or addict toward recovery. It is recognized that almost all substance abusers begin treatment without the motivation to change. The first task of treatment is to help the drug user develop a greater recognition of the problem, and to support the growing motivation to change.
We think of addiction in layers of complexity. Addicts are hooked on intoxication, not just marijuana, alcohol or opiates.
Underneath the addiction are genetic vulnerabilities and poor development of cognitive & neuro-biological stress regulation systems. Typically, people with addiction have an inability to negotiate relationships and utilize relationships as a resource for stress management. These issues and others such as trauma, relational dynamics and similar issues must be understood by the client and the people in their life to allow a return to wellness.
Our job is to closely work with the individual and family to help the client become drug free. Then the goal is to illuminate and treat the underpinning issues which supported emotional dysregulation and addictions.
