Have You Ever Heard of This
New Designer Club Drug: 2c-B?
It was a year ago during a drug use history report that I was taking from a young man when I first learned about 2C-B. I asked him what he knew about the drug and what his experience was and he reported, “It is like LSD but supposedly a lot safer… Look it up man on Erowid.” Erowid.com of course is the first online website kids peruse when wanting to do research on drugs. At first I simply took a mental note of the drug, but didn’t hear of it again until about 4 months later, and then 3 weeks ago when my intern discovered it on a drug use history he was taking. It turns out that there are already educational DVD’s available to educate therapists and educators on this drug. So I thought I would put together what the kids are gathering from Erowid.com and pass it on to you, so that you are more aware of this substance and can add it to your knowledge base & assessments.
Nexus; Bees; Venus; Bromo Mescaline
2C-B is a synthetic psychedelic that first gained popularity as a legal Ecstasy replacement in the mid 1980s. It is known for having a strong physical component to its effects and a moderate duration.
Okay 2C-B is 4-bromo-2,5-dimethoxyphenethylamine. Its the phenethylamine analogue of DOB. The 2C is because its had a 2-carbon chain sticking off of the phenyl ring (which
(contd.) is why it’s a phenethylamine instead of an amphetamine), and I *assume* the B is because of the Br atom in the 4 position.
Doses are 12-24mg, Duration is 4-8 hours. Doses of 100mg have been taken safely. 2C-B seems to be an extraordinarily colorful hallucinogen similar to LSD — apparently somewhat analytical and disassociate in higher doses or in those sensitive to those effects. Quote from Ecstasy: The MDMA Story… [begins with a quotation from Alexander Shulgin]:
2C-B… is a tool… which ties the mental processes directly and constructively into the physical soma.
The analgesic effects experienced with many, if not most, psychedelic drugs, are not present with 2C-B. On the contrary, there is increased body awareness of every kind, including skin sensitivity, heightened responsiveness to smells, tastes, and sexual stimulation.
One experiences increased consciousness of physical health and energy, or, on the other hand, sharpened awareness of any body imbalance or discomfort.
2C-B allows for rich visual imagery and intense eyes-closed fantasy without the cluttering up of the mental field with too much elaboration… It is a superb tool for learning and growth. [Alexander Shulgin, “Psychedelics and Spirituality” 1983 Conference]
[…] At high doses (above 30 mgs.), 2C-B is intensely hallucinogenic, and, like any major psychedelic, can be frightening for certain people. In small doses, it becomes a mild sensory enhancer but does not have the strongly empathogenic qualities that MDMA has.
Perhaps the best use that has been found for 2C-B is as a synergist with MDMA. When taken together, the MDMA pushes the non-specific 2C-B reaction in a more warm and emphathetic direction. Because 2C-B is a psychedelic drug, and therefore not fully predictable, its action can take the user in many different directions. But if the set and setting are right, 2C-B can enhance the desire for sexual orgasm during an MDMA experience. The synergy of the two substances can on occasion be a true aphrodisiac. [Eisner, 1989]
So this is what the kids are reading about this substance and the clients who I have talked to tell me that this information on the web helps them to feel safer about taking it vs. LSD L
All of the clinicians at RHCS share the same knowledge base and operate in the same structured treatment model. We are proud to be a resource for the Dr. Phil Show and a community resource serving families of teens, adolescents and young adults with substance abuse and drug addiction in Sacramento, Fair Oaks, Carmichael, Folsom, Granite Bay, Roseville, Rocklin, Elk Grove, Davis, El Dorado Hills, Citrus Heights, Solano, Yolo county and other surrounding areas.
Drug, alcohol and mental health issues are very serious matters
Each session has a specific purpose in the structured process of guiding a substance abuser or addict toward recovery. It is recognized that almost all substance abusers begin treatment without the motivation to change. The first task of treatment is to help the drug user develop a greater recognition of the problem, and to support the growing motivation to change.
The family education program
Experience shows that recovery will be long lasting only if changes continue to be made in several key areas in an persons life.
Such changes will necessitate a review of attitudes, feelings and behaviors. This is where the parents come in.
Building the family’s ability to support recovery
The Family Education Program is structured to help parents and guardians understand their crucial role in the recovery process. Participation in this part of the program is so essential that it is mandatory.
We also support and encourage parental awareness and growth through recommended readings and referrals to support groups in the community.
Referrals and community collaboration
Our counselors have an extensive network with other care providers and are happy to work with families to find appropriate resources should there be a need for specialized services or a more intensive treatment program.
The Recovery Happens Treatment Program
Any chemical use is potentially harmful. A person under the influence of mood altering substances has an impaired ability to make healthy decisions and their brain chemistry is being altered.
Substance abuse is an emotional illness. After a relationship with drugs or alcohol has developed, the ability to identify, express, and cope with emotions is damaged and their emotions become numbed and distorted.
Addiction is a biochemical disease. Addiction is a primary, chronic, progressive disease that has its roots in genetics, brain chemistry and attachment.
Substance abuse occurs in all kinds of families. Substance abuse crosses the lines of gender, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, socioeconomic background, and spiritual and religious beliefs.
Everyone in the family is effected by chemical abuse. Family members and others close to a person who is abusing chemicals are affected by the use and the consequences of that use.
Recovery requires support. Essential elements of recovery are lifestyle change and support.
