How To Help Your Child Become Drug Free

Ch # 8. excerpt:

Encouragement:

It has been our intention to familiarize you thoroughly with the nature of the drug problem. The availability of drugs and the prevalence of adolescent drug problems across our nation is strong evidence that necessitates the same attention as the attention given to all problems that affect the welfare of our youth. As you have probably realized, the problem itself can present a broad range of complexities. The most important thing to recognize, however, is that a drug problem does not cure itself. It does not go away without implementing particular actions. Currently, there is a prominent advertising campaign, which states that, "Action is the anti-drug." It's true! Parents concerned about the health and well-being of their children are in an optimal position to initiate such actions. To some degree, parents still maintain the legal and economic advantage that can facilitate a course of behavioral changes in children or young adults. Remember that it is not necessary to have your child's permission, cooperation or desire to stop using drugs in order for you to intercede in this behavior, and there are many resources you can enlist to support your efforts to resolve this problem. Some of the resources are of no monetary cost to you. When there is a fee involved, sometimes it will be based on what an individual family can afford. Do not be afraid to ask a counselor or physician about this.

There is a plan that parents can implement to attempt to get their child drug free. There are combinations of strategies that can be tailored to meet the needs of individuals and their families. There is a tool available, The Setting Limits Contract, which we know to be very effective in the management of an adolescent drug problem. Still, some parents hesitate to act.
