How To Help Your Child Become Drug Free

Ch # 7. excerpt:

Your Family in Recovery:

The greatest opportunity for a child's recovery from a drug problem lies within the context of the child's own family. Earlier, we stated the three prime areas of focus that pertain to child and adolescent recovery as counseling, nutrition education and twelve-step meetings for the chemically dependent individual. We also discussed the unique aspect of this specific kind of recovery as one in which all family members are affected. Ultimately, the adolescent will choose whether or not he will use drugs. Recovery is not guaranteed. However, if he or she is to have the optimal chance for recovery, the individual's family must provide the proper environment and support. For all families, this means undergoing change. Some families will need to make dramatic changes. Part of changing is being open to the advice of others and being willing to look within yourself to examine the motives for your behavior.

In a family parents are viewed as leaders, main financial providers and those who have the power to set a positive example during the process of recovery. It may be the case, however, that parents themselves are struggling with their own addictions and unhealthy parenting behaviors. Clearly, such unresolved problems complicate and sabotage the adolescent's chance for recovery. Recovery for yourself or spouse is key to your child's recovery. If you or your partner is experiencing problems with alcohol or drugs, your child's chances for recovery are greatly diminished. Recovery from addiction and unhealthy parenting behavior is possible, however. Family members need to work individually and simultaneously to maintain the common goal of recovery.

Parents must deal directly with areas in need of personal repair, which may include addiction problems, unhealthy parenting behaviors, gaining insight to the family in which they were raised and divorce.
