How To Help Your Child Become Drug Free
Ch # 2. excerpt:
The Stages of Drug Use and Their Rapid Progression:
|
An adolescent may become dependent on chemicals early in his use of drugs. If he has a genetic predisposition to chemical dependency, he might experience symptoms immediately. Due to the insidious nature of drug abuse, your child may develop an addiction before you are even aware that he has been using drugs. Several factors contribute to the rapid progression of drug use in adolescents. In this regard, it will be helpful to examine the differences in drug usage between adolescents and adults. Keep in mind that for adolescent drug users, drug use itself may be their single social event or recreation, the purpose of which is intoxication. Adult drinking, however, is generally only a part of a social event. For example, an adult may drink to toast to a newly married couple at a wedding and that toast will conclude any further alcohol consumption. The remainder of his time might be spent visiting with others, eating, listening to music or dancing. Although, as adults we may continue to hone our social skills and learn adapt to different settings or situations, we have also had the benefit of and experience to develop socially. Childhood and adolescence constitute the time when practicing social skills begins. Learning to socialize and gain acceptance from their peers is crucial to adolescents. Most children expend a great deal of energy towards this end and the school day certainly affords them the opportunity to meet this challenge. Understandably, parents tend to trust their children's school as a safe and reliable atmosphere. It is assumed that the student's focus is on academics and school-related activities. Unfortunately, school can be the very place to buy and sell drugs and to talk about how great it is to get high. Easy availability of drugs significantly contributes to the progression of drug use. Moreover, there is frequently tremendous peer pressure on campus that further serves to fuel the magnitude of the drug problem. Adults, by comparison, are more likely to be locked into very structured work settings and time constraints. They have inescapable responsibilities such as bill paying and maintaining a house. Generally, an adult's employment setting is separate from one's social pursuits. For high schoolers, work and play are integrated. Additionally, adults are more apt to use one drug exclusively while adolescents generally use a combination of drugs. This is referred to as "poly drug use." The use of different drugs increases the body's need for more drugs in order to achieve a desired physical or mental effect and a specific feeling of intoxication; this physiological condition is referred to as "tolerance."1/ |
